Counselling

While the terms counselling and psychotherapy are often used interchangeably, counselling tends to be shorter term and more focused on addressing a specific problem, difficulty or challenge.

You may be going through a period of change, struggling with anxiety or low mood, experiencing difficulties in a relationship, or simply finding that something in your life isn’t working as you’d like it to. Counselling offers a confidential space to talk things through, make sense of what you’re experiencing and consider what might help.

Counselling doesn’t require you to have everything figured out before you begin. We can start with whatever feels most important to you and think together about what you need from the work.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy offers an opportunity to explore your experiences in greater depth, particularly when difficulties feel longstanding, complex or connected to patterns that you find difficult to understand or change.

Our work may involve looking at how past experiences have shaped the way you relate to yourself and others, exploring emotions and relationships, or making sense of recurring patterns in your life. Sometimes the focus is on understanding where difficulties have come from. Sometimes it is on developing new ways of relating to yourself, other people and the world around you.

Psychotherapy is usually longer term than counselling, although the length and focus of the work will depend on what you want to explore and what feels helpful for you.

Group work

My approach to group work is informed by group analytic theory and practice, which pays attention not only to each individual but also to the relationships and dynamics that develop between people.

I am not currently running an ongoing therapy group within my private practice. I am, however, available to work with organisations, community groups and other settings to develop and facilitate groups tailored to their particular needs.

This might include therapeutic or personal development groups, reflective practice, staff support, or groups exploring particular experiences or themes. If you are considering group work within your organisation, I would be happy to have an initial conversation about what you are hoping to achieve and how I might help.
